Detach your imagination from the plane in Nick Cage's "Con Air"!
Though they have nearly always called the Justice Prisoner and Alien Transporter System (JPATS) "ConAir" the plane is not at all close to that particular hollywood version. The real plane and enviroment is a lot closer to the scene in Tommy Lee's "US Marshals".

We have expressed the multitude of surprises we found at NTI. This might have been the biggest. I talked briefly with Sara a recruiter for J.A. Thomas. She was looking specifically for that still rare commodity- Experienced Critical Care Nurses (to include mid-levels, ED nurses, CNS and the like).

While at NTI this year I met Marian Watkins a recruiter for Kaiser Permanente and was reminded of a personal vignette. The summer of 2002 I was researching an ED nursing job in Portland Oregon. I did what most nurses don’t do- my homework. I contacted the recruiters at each hospital I thought I might want to work for and asked to meet the ED nurse manager and get a tour.

I was surprised to meet Germaine Kenny at this year’s NTI critical care expo. She is a nurse recruiter for the Australian State of Queensland (NW OZ- think Great Barrier Reef). Apparently, they have a nursing shortage as well and they are interested in U.S. nurses who want to try it out Down Under. We had a great chat and here is what I learned.

We set out to discover the best hospital sponsored tuition assistance for those lucky children birthed and raised by nurses. Now this may seem obvious to many, and if you are an FNP happy to work in a small student health center your odds are better...and if it is a large school, we lowly RN’s may even find employment with this added benefit- but these jobs are few and the odds are not on everyone’s side. I have lived, worked and played in Anchorage, Alaska for more than 9 years now and I must admit that though it has been nothing like what I envisioned in 1999, it has never failed to amaze me every day. Having traveled around the state and enjoyed numerous tales of other folk’s excursions- I think I have a grasp of the most interesting places for an adventurous nurse to get into the wild.

Here at Hospital Review, we love it when hospitals think outside the box. It’s not always more money, money, money- sometimes the key to recruitment and retention is innovation and flexibility. Example? Well we have searched, surveyed, interviewed, applied to and cajoled hospitals to get the whole story about their benefits. A rare few are transparent, some are willing to talk, many guard this information like a state secret.

Unprepared for “That Would be a Pay Cut!” Response!
So when we designed our T-shirts for NTI (Nurses Making $125K) we knew there would be some nurses in disbelief. We were prepared for this scenario- armed with a recent USPHS pay stub! However, before the conference even officially kicked off we were smacked in the face with the implausible "Yea so what- I make way more than that!"> read full story
OR Consultants (no medical background) making $100K to $500K
I was approached not so long ago by a gentleman looking to hire an underling. He described himself as an independent OR consultant. He Rep’s primarily for the medical device company Smith and Nephew. In the past I personally have avoided the fairly well known path of Drug Rep, but this was different. The best way I can explain it is this- if I want to know the benefits of drinking a crazy organic fruit energy drin> read full story
